He was a son of Motilal Nehru, a renowned lawyer and leader of the Indian independence movement, who became one of Mohandas (Mahatma) Gandhi’s prominent associates.
Until the age of 16, Nehru was educated at home by a series of English governesses and tutors.
Nehru met Mahatma Gandhi for the first time in 1916 at the Indian National Congress (Congress Party) annual meeting in Lucknow. Gandhi was 20 years his senior.
On May 26 1964, he felt quite comfortable and went to bed at about 23:30 as usual; he had a restful night until about 06:30. Soon after he returned from the bathroom, Nehru complained of pain in the back. He spoke to the doctors who attended on him for a brief while, and almost immediately, Nehru collapsed. He remained unconscious until he died early in the afternoon.
