If you’re one of the 50-70 million adults in the United States who suffer from sleep disorders, you’re not alone. One of the most common sleep disorders is insomnia, which makes it difficult to fall asleep, stay asleep, or both.
Causes of insomnia include stress, anxiety, depression, medications and medical conditions. Insomnia can also be caused by lack of sleep.
People with insomnia may feel tired during the day and have trouble concentrating. They can also be easily irritable and have trouble getting along with others. Insomnia can lead to other problems such as depression and anxiety.
If you think you have insomnia, talk to your doctor. He or she can help find and treat the cause. There are also things you can do to help yourself.
You can start changing your sleeping habits. Go to bed at the same time every day and wake up at the same time. Create a calm, dark and cool environment in your bedroom. Don’t watch TV, use your computer or phone in bed.
If you can’t sleep, get up and do something quiet until you’re tired.
